This post is primarily for the Beavis and Butthead generation. For those of you who never witnessed their comedic genius, Beavis had an alter-ego named Cornholio who walked around with his hands above his head like so:

Cornholio

They look a lot alike since Sawyer always sleeps with his arms above his head. Here is a picture from Sawyer’s very first nap in the hospital just an hour after his birth:

After his first bath. As far as I know, no one posed him that way...

And here is another picture from his most recent nap this evening:

Sawyer as the Great Cornholio??

According to Abby, I called him Cornholio almost from the very start. Now you know why, and now you can too!

One of Sawyer’s favorite places to hang out is his changing table. While he gets to freshen up, he loves looking at his Art Cards, which are “high contrast animal art cards which provide visual stimulation and entertainment in baby’s own private gallery!” or so says the box. He particularly loves the kitty and the owl. He looks for the cards every time he lays down.

While the first several minutes of the video are cute, the best part is right at the end!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently. Sawyer has finally settled down into a nice little rhythm, but Abby and I are still playing catch-up. As a result, we haven’t had much energy to put into much of anything other than survival.

Of course, we never rest when the weekend comes. We ran all around town yesterday, and did more of the same today. Luckily Sawyer pretty much sleeps through anything once we leave the house, so he’s ready to play when we get home.

I was able to snap a few quick pictures of Sawyer tonight. First, Sawyer takes his nightly bath:

After drying off and getting dressed, Sawyer stared into Abby’s eyes and smiled from ear-to-ear:

I absolutely love these pictures, but wait until you see the video we’re going to post tomorrow!

Although it is not nearly as cold in SF as it is in Ohio, you would think that it is 10 below when it is bath time. We turn on all the bathroom lights and the shower on hot in order to warm up the bathroom. He still shivers. So, we work really hard to warm him up as soon as the bath is finished. Hence the little gloves which will make their way to Ohio in March.

He also likes to sport his little lion hat which has the ability to make him look the pope or L.L. Cool J. Don’t worry about his little red cheeks. This was due to baby acne, which is totally normal and has subsided. He is back to his cute self now.

Sawyer heard that his uncle Kevin is really good at making shadow puppet animals, so Sawyer decided to start practicing. Not too bad for his first try, but I bet Kevin can show him some new tricks.

After a somewhat difficult week — who knew that Sawyer’s second Hep B vaccine shot would make him so uncomfortable and cranky — we finally began to settle into our rhythm again last night.

Today was a much more enjoyable day as well. We took a walk down the park, ran some errands in the car, took a (long overdue) bath, and then spent some time hanging out together in bed. That’s where tonight’s show begins:

That’s three smiles in a row!

Note the new bookcase in the corner full of Sawyer’s books and stuffed animals. We’re slowly putting together Sawyer-land, and quickly running out of room! =)

As we near the magical six-week mark, Sawyer is definitely coming into his own. He is much more in control of his facial expressions, his repertoire of noises grows more and more elaborate by the second, and he often belches with so much force it even takes him by surprise (and makes his mother and father very proud).

Now if only he’ll start sleeping through the night!

Some of you may know the story of Sawyer’s birth, but some of you may not. As this blog is as much Sawyer as for family and friends, I will attempt to relate the story as coherently as my very tired memory will allow (believe me this is much easier said than done).

Sawyer’s original due date was 12/14, but as a result of his first ultrasound, it was moved up to 12/5 due to his size. As many of you already know, big babies run on my side of the family on my Mom’s side. I don’t know how this would effect the due dates, but I felt that his due date should have remained where it was.

As a result of the 12/5 due date, my parents decided to fly out to San Francisco to be here for the birth. They arrived on 12/4. My Dad arrived with a cold, which got worst the next day. He remained in his hotel room getting better by eating Quizno’s and taking Nyquil.

My Mom and I went to Bloomingdale’s in the new mall hoping that the walking would provide some “expulsion propulsion” - contractions to you and me. The idea to go walking/shopping was the original idea of my Grandma Addie Doernberg’s back in 1974 as a way to help to encourage my birth. Knowing my love of shopping, it totally makes sense that I spent the entire day before I was born in the mall.

Back to Sawyer, nothing resulted from the day at the mall except my first real backache of my pregnancy. We proceeded to replay the day over the next day in Noe Valley and other small shopping districts in SF, but to no avail. My Dad, although feeling better, was unfortunately called back to Ohio after being here to just under 2 days. (Although I love my teenage brothers very much, sometimes they are a big pain.) It was very hard to see him go home.

While Scott spend the last few days leading up to the birth trying to finish up important work related projects. My Mom and I spent the next few days watching tv and knitting. It was really nice to spend time alone with her, as this had not happened in a very long time (again, I love my brothers, but they have always really loved attention).

So, with no birth in sight, except for the impending inducement day of 12/12, my Mom went home a day early on 12/10. It was very hard to see her go home too.

After a very tumultuous day, which ended up in the need for a bath (very stinky baby), Sawyer took a little couch nap. When I removed his hat, his hair was super wavy.

We love these socks! Scott got them at Janie and Jack, our favorite place for baby clothes (they have the best sales.) Scott folds the tops down, because apparently that is the way it is done. Like father like son.

Sawyer celebrated his one month old birthday today. He spent it in the usual ways: keeping his parents up most of the night, having a couple really good poopy diapers, and giving us some spit-up too. Later, he visited the pediatrician where he weighed in at 10 lbs. 9 oz. I now have a new appreciation for my mom. When I was born, I was 10 lbs. 8 oz. I am thankful my Mom didn’t remind me of that fact more often, because she could have. I was a really big baby!

Sawyer’s length (22 1/4”) was in the 60th percentile, and his weight was in the 50th percentile. The place where he excels is in his head measurement (15 1/2”) which is in the 90th percentile. This is where he takes after his Dad who looked a lot like Elmer Fudd at birth because of his enormous head. Someday I will attach the photo of Scott as a baby which shows exactly how large Scott’s head really was. I’m sure they were both preprogrammed with all kinds of extra knowledge about computers that most people do not have, hence the giant noggins.

Sawyer ended the day (we hope) by hanging out with his pals on the bed. In reality, we’ll be up again in an hour or two at the most.

Happy one month birthday, Sawyer!
