After spending the afternoon at the ballpark (see baby giant posts one and two), Sawyer came home and took a solid 2+ hour nap. In fact, I had to wake him up so that we could meet Abby on Market Street for the parade. The floats and bands lined up at the end of our street, so we got to see the parade in reverse.

Sawyer spent most of the time perched on one of us, while the other one took video. He’s really getting heavy now, but it’s always fun to have him on my shoulders. I think he likes it too:

We made our way up to Market Street, which is the main thoroughfare through the heart of San Francisco. This is the very tail end of the parade, and while the video is a little shaky at the beginning it ends with an excellent view of a very happy Sawyer:

Abby took Sawyer over to see a dragon and a marching band. We’re starting to get in the thick of things now, and he is absolutely fascinated:

Listen to his excitement at the gigantic wheel on the float beside us, and watch his reaction to seeing the percussion section of another band rehearse in front of us (he blinked every time the hit the drum harder than before):

We missed the beginning of the parade and the most extravagant dragon of all, but it was probably for the best — I’m not sure how Sawyer would have done with the fireworks in the street. We did find a good place to watch the rest of the parade, but for me the highlight was seeing Abby dance with Sawyer to one of the many marching bands and some really awful chinese techno:

Here’s one of the many dragons, quite possibly the most boring one, but I wanted to give you something to compare the last dragon to. Oh, and, Abby really liked the dancing miso soup cups or rice bowls, no one really knew for sure:

Sawyer started to fidget and fuss, to be fair he lasted longer than I expected and was likely hungry too, so we headed for home. We just so happened to see the second best dragon of the night on our way. They performed right in front of us, it was easily the best part of the night:

I mean, right in front of us! Sawyer loved it too:

I don’t think we did a thing on Sunday, I know I was worn out from all of the fun we had on Saturday. Apparently San Francisco’s Chinese New Year parade is the biggest one outside of the Chinese mainland, and I can see why. It was easily the most exciting thing I’ve seen in five years here. We have watched it on tv before, but nothing compares to being on the street for it. Happy new year!
