On Sunday, Sawyer and I hopped in the car and drove down to Ocean Beach. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred it’s much too cold and windy there, but the weather was just right.

Sawyer loves to get his feet wet, which usually means his shorts and shirt too. I have learned from past experience, and now bring both a change of clothes and a towel to dry him off. (Can you believe I never thought of either one before?) This time I just put him in his bathing suit from the start; he seemed happier and I had much less to worry about.

When near or in the water, I always keep one hand firmly on his arm. I don’t think he cares for that, but hasn’t had a way to break free until now. Sure enough, he just runs in a circle until I’m so dizzy I can’t hang on. Not cool, Sawyer.

At any rate, we walked down the beach until I found a flat shelf that went out about 100 feet. The water was calm and only ankle deep, so it was perfect for Sawyer to play around in. I even felt secure enough to get some video of him splashing around. And that’s when a sneaker wave came up. I quickly put the camera in my pocket, scooped him up, and worked my way back to the shore:

Of course, Sawyer wasn’t happy about missing out on the big wave, but he survived the indignity of being rescued yet again. Once back on land, I gave him some juice, hoping that would keep him occupied long enough for me to take a few pics:

He looks so big and strong here:

I love going to the ocean with you, Sawyer. There’s never a dull moment, that’s for sure!
