Of course there’s no music playing, but that doesn’t stop Sawyer. He’s just happy to be standing up in his crib, gnawing on the top railing, taking in the sights and sounds, and watching Abby play peak-a-boo on the stairs. What a character:

We’re still up to our ears in boxes, and rapidly nearing the arrival of our movers on Wednesday at 1pm. I have one more post queued up for you tomorrow evening, then the post after that will be the first from our new apartment!

Sawyer was sick over the weekend, but that hasn’t stopped him from trying to stand whenever possible. Tonight, after his bath and feeding, Abby put him in his crib. He immediately stood up and started to scream.

Abby picked him up, held him for a bit, calmed him down, then put him back in the crib. Again, he immediately stood up and started to scream.

We stayed downstairs for a little longer the second time, hoping he would grow tired and give up. He did not, tenacious little bugger that he is. Since Diana, Abby’s mother, thinks he never cries or causes any trouble, I grabbed the camera to give all of you a little taste of our last week with Sawyer:

He was so tired he didn’t know what to do with himself. Abby also thinks he’s not quite sure how to sit back down once standing, so that likely had something to do with it. As soon as I shut off the camera and laid him down, he feel right to sleep. What a relief!

To be fair, he gave me his cold from last week, and I’ve been down for the count, so it’s no wonder he was so unhappy. I think he’s just starting to feel better, but still lacks his full energy, hence the frustration.

On a related note, there was one night last week, some time around 2am if memory serves me well, that Sawyer was wide awake and completely uninterested in going back to sleep. Since it was dark, I figured he could play with his firebugs that his Grandparents Truitt bought for him — they blink when struck, and Sawyer loves to put them in his mouth. I think he enjoyed it:

He slept better last night than he has in a long time, as he was quickly falling back to sleep without any fuss. Hopefully tonight will be even more of a success. I’m starting to feel a little better myself, and really hoping that Abby makes it through unscathed. It hasn’t been a whole lot of fun around here.

It’s been a big couple of days for us, and especially so for Sawyer. As I was eating breakfast on Friday morning, I looked over to see Sawyer on his tummy playing with his toys. Not a minute later he was sitting up on his own. Abby reported a similar sighting the day before. There was no audible struggle, no grunts or groans. Neither of us had seen him practice this, as far as we can tell he just did it.

This morning, Abby looked over to see Sawyer standing in his crib. Standing in his crib! Again, all on his own. Needless to say, I lowered the crib this afternoon. There is no chance for escape now, Sawyer!

The three of us did our best to recreate these scenes for all of you, and while not everything is exactly as we experienced it, I think we hit all of the high notes.

Sawyer goes from sitting to standing to flat on his back and back again:

Sawyer takes a tumble, but Abby fixes it:

Sawyer explores the space (it’s a long way down, but there’s no way he’s getting out without us):

On top of all of this, Sawyer hasn’t been feeling well. He was really congested today, and had his first ever runny nose too. He hasn’t slept well the past few nights, but we’re hoping for better luck tonight (so far so good).

It amazes me that even in his misery he retains such joy in life. You would never have guessed he didn’t feel well, would you?

Wednesday night, Scott and I went out on our first date night since Sawyer arrived. Our good friends Erin and Rachel came over to babysit. From their recounting of the evenings events, it went pretty well. With the exception of a few mis-matched snaps on the bottom of Sawyer’s pj’s, I would say it was perfect, and we can’t thank them enough. Someday we may even remember to take a picture of Sawyer and Rachel for the blog to go along with the ones we have of Erin.

Sawyer was his happy little self in the morning. Usually we awake to see little feet flying back and forth, up and down, and in and out of the top and sides of the crib. No matter how tired I am, this always brings a smile to my face. This morning, Sawyer was not only bringing a smile to my face, he was making me laugh out loud.

Notice his roosterdo hair peeking out up top.

It is amazing to me how he can wake up almost every morning with the biggest, brightest smile. It is what a Visa commercial would call “Priceless”.

Sawyer in the crib

As I have mentioned before, just like me, Sawyer likes to cover up his eyes when he is going to sleep. He went to new lengths tonight. We have been ever vigilant with making sure he does not cover up too much of his face for the obvious choking hazards. Not only does he cover up, he also likes to turn to his side and press his face against the side of the crib. The two together lead to this scene. I, of course, snapped a quick picture, because describing it would not have done it justice. Sometimes Scott and I just look at each other, shake our heads, and say, “What a little weirdo.”

He loves his little blue lion blankie named “Roary”. It is perfect for helping him fall asleep. It is also perfect, because I became a bit obsessed with watching past seasons of the “Gilmore Girls”. Rory is a primary character. Scott loves to make fun of the never ending dialog on “the GG’s”.

Sawyer is trying to sleep

It was a bit dark in the room, so the pictures are a little out of focus. As soon as I snapped that shot, he turned over and gave me his biggest and brightest smile.

Sawyer won't go to sleep

Sawyer won't go to sleep

A few weeks ago, we enlarged Sawyer’s bed from bassinet to crib as he was running out of room. The crib gives him ample opportunity to move around.

He has mastered turning over to the right from his back to his belly (he hasn’t figured out turning over to his left yet), but I only wish that he would stop doing it in his sleep. It isn’t such a problem when he turns over half way to his side…

Loving Baloo

Baloo is holding Sawyer back

…but when he makes it all the over he wakes himself up. He unfortunately has not figured out how to right himself. He huffs and puffs until he gets the attention of me or Scott. This happens both day and night (just when we were getting used to sleeping a straight 8 hours again).

So, Scott and I thought that we were being smart by placing him closer to the right side of the crib to impede his turn. It only sort of worked. I have a feeling that this will not be the last time he tries to outsmart us.
