On Saturday afternoon, after an all-too-eventful football game, Sawyer had his wig busted. It wouldn’t have been possible without that magical yellow car, but it kept him occupied enough for a whirlwind cut. He was rewarded with an extended stay at the park next to the train stop while Abby got her hair cut too. He definitely looks like a little boy again:
On Sunday, Abby and I decided to leave the cool and foggy San Francisco weather behind in favor of warm and sunny Sonoma. You can barely see the Golden Gate Bridge as we left town:
It was in the mid 60s on the bridge and low 80s in Sonoma, which is just about 40 miles away. Sawyer took a short nap in the car but he was ready to go once he saw the park:
And gucks!
Here’s a trick of his I’ve never seen before:
After lunch, we took Sawyer to Train Town. It had all of the charm of a low-budget county fair, but fortunately the “coo coos” more than made up for it (sadly, there was no sign of Engineer Kermit). Sawyer was in heaven:
The three of us even took an extended ride on one. Here we are waiting for the all aboard call:
Sawyer stood in between my legs and said “coo coo” and “woo woo” almost the entire time:
The train stopped about half-way through in this weirdo little, and by little I mean miniature, town with a petting zoo. Sawyer was more interested in the “ah boose” at the end of the train:
Before we left, we hit the merry go round:
It was tough to leave Sonoma, but Sawyer needed a real nap. Of course, the fog was waiting for us at the Golden Gate:
And finally, as if that weren’t enough excitement for one weekend, the three of us went to the beach on Monday. It was so sunny and warm that the ocean even felt good enough to be in for more than a second at a time. Abby and I took turns trying to keep him dry:
Note the lack of shorts, his one and only pair ended up completely soaked so he had to go the rest of the afternoon in just a diaper. Sawyer had so much fun in the water, he just couldn’t get enough. It was hard work trying to keep him safe and relatively dry. Look at him go:
Hysterical.
Tomorrow, the three of us get to celebrate Abby’s birthday! It looks to be another beautiful day in San Francisco so I hope we can get outside and take some more pictures. Happy birthday, Abby!
Abby and I took Sawyer to get only his second haircut on Wednesday. Not bad for an almost 15 month old. I held him in the chair, and by that I mean I physically restrained him for a solid 20 minutes. To keep him occupied, he had a bottle to drink, some crackers to eat, a comb to chew on, a hair clip to inspect, his Horton movie to watch, Abby’s water to spill, and my phone to slobber on. We had grand plans to get some video of this one, just like last time, but you can imagine we were somewhat distracted.
Abby has her monthly mommy’s night out tonight, so after wrestling with getting Sawyer in his PJs, I grabbed the camera to document the new do.
You’ll be happy to know we kept the curls:
He’s playing, not pouting:
Focused on his bus as usual:
More bus:
I always pretend that his dinosaur is a dog and wag its tail for him, I think Sawyer was trying to do the same, but it looks like he’s choking it:
Or eating it:
Or coming up with an even better idea:
Where are Patric’s eyes?
Looking for diggers:
His feet are huge:
He looks like a little boy, very handsome and very, very happy. We’ll be home with him in less than four weeks!
You know how much I love to make way too many bubbles in Sawyer’s bath so I can pile them high on his head, right? Remember the Bob Ross pictures? I think I finally topped that:
Yep, that’s Sawyer under there:
It almost seems like he likes it:
Later, I went with more of a World B. Free meets the Tele Tubbies look:
Which then went in the direction of Dumbledore, as I painstakingly applied the beard:
He’s casting a spell:
Nope, just playing:
He’s such a good sport, I honestly don’t know how I get away with it!
One of my favorite tubby tricks, aside from giving him a mohawk or an Ed Grimly, is to give Sawyer a gigantic bubble afro. Last week’s effort was one of my best.
Here’s the making of:

And the celebration:
My parents can tell you how much I loved watching Bob Ross — “We don’t make mistakes, we just have happy little accidents” — every Saturday morning. I tried painting only once, and believe me he made it look a lot easier on tv. My sister Sarah just started painting recently. Wait until you see her work, she’s really good!
I don’t think I am the only one who looks forward to his bath, our little Sawyer monster loves it more and more every time. It’s always one of the last things we do together, just after dinner and right before bed. It’s a perfect way to wind down his day.
The other night he was especially playful, gnawing on his toothbrush, and splashing all around. I’m not sure if his hair had anything to do with it, but he was absolutely beaming:
Like everything else he touches, the toothbrush went straight into his mouth. Too bad he couldn’t get it in the right way, but it gives us something to work on in the coming months. Here’s hoping he’ll have some more teeth by then too!
After much discussion — remember the poll and results — Abby and I finally agreed to get Sawyer’s hair cut. It wasn’t an easy decision, but after seeing the pictures in the tub from last time, we realized it’s long overdue.
I had my hair cut first this morning, while Sawyer finished up his nap. When he woke up, Abby brought him down to watch me, then have his rooster do quickly trimmed. It certainly wasn’t easy holding him still, and Susan even said it was the most difficult haircut she’s ever done, but two minutes later he was a brand new man (baby). He didn’t even cry or make a fuss, in fact he may not have even noticed what was going on!
He was so excited when he sat down in front of the big mirror (the cape was a short-lived experiment):
I had to put him in a bear hold just to hold him still:
Then Abby gave him the camera case to play with:
And that was just enough of a distraction to get it done:
Last but not least, here’s the video. Before:
During and after:
btw, CNU Sharp was the name of a barber shop in Columbus that we passed on the way to Crew games. My dad always loved the name, we all did come to think of it, and it was the first thought in my mind when I saw Sawyer’s new look. I hope you agree he does look sharp, and sleek, and even more aerodynamic than before, which is just what we needed.
Thanks for voting on Sawyer’s hairstyle this weekend. I hope you’re happy to know that I will not cut his rooster do before our trip home this weekend.
This is what you have to look forward to:
I guess that means I get to make him look even more ridiculous when he gets out of his bath. Fortunately for him, the rest of his hair is slowly growing in beneath it. =)
Just four more days to go!
By now, you’ve all seen the pictures of Sawyer’s mohawk, or as I now refer to it, his rooster do. Here’s a classic picture to refresh your memory:
I have been trying to convince Abby to let me trim it to match the rest of his hair, but she doesn’t want to just yet. And so I thought it might be fun to let all of you vote on it, in the hopes of resolving this dilemma once and for all. =)
