When he’s not running around like a madman, Sawyer likes to play with his trucks on the beach. It’s really quite refreshing — he goes about it quietly, doesn’t fuss or complain, and just enjoys himself:

Putting sand in trucks to make tracks on the beach

Ocean Beach is the best place for him to play like this. It’s flat and wide open, so the waves are less condensed and much less powerful. Unfortunately, it’s rarely warm enough to be there for long, and truthfully I was pushing it by going there last Saturday, but I love playing in the sand too.

As I said in yesterday’s post, it’s nearly impossible to pull him away from the ocean. Fortunately it was cold that night, so he left without too much fuss.

There’s that ever present tongue:

Finally taking a break

Since he was so well-behaved, Abby and I let him roll around in the sand:

He was covered from head to toe

To his delight:

Great picture, Abby:

I love this one too:

Abby and I managed to knock most of the sand off of him before he climbed on top of me:

But he was still able to get a little bit of sand down my back:

I’m not sure who enjoys this more, me or him:

I think we both win:

Almost time to go:

I’m glad we took advantage of that relatively warm night last week. The long holiday weekend was supposed to be full of exceptionally nice weather, but it ended up cool and foggy. That’s summer in San Francisco.

Thanks for the great pictures, Abby!

After work, a pizza dinner, and a quick trip to the Marina for errands, the three of us stopped by Baker Beach to enjoy the what little remained of the day. It was beautiful and warm that afternoon, but windy and cold on the beach. Sawyer wasn’t much interested in the water, but I can’t really blame him — dropping one toe in the water for just one second had me running away too. Here’s the scene on the beach:

Sawyer is still learning how to play in the sand. Here’s a hint, keep it out of your mouth:

Abby and I were ready to go, but Sawyer still wanted to play. He couldn’t resist chasing after a dog that passed by:

I love >living so close to the beach, even if it’s rarely warm enough to go there. I promised myself that I would go as often as I could, especially when it’s nice, and I can’t wait until the fall when things finally heat up around here. Expect plenty of sand castle pictures soon!

Last Tuesday after swimming, Sawyer and I played for a while at the Crissy Field beach on the bay. I saw a park officer on a horse and thought that Sawyer might like to meet them. As we got close to the horse, I realized that the officer was giving a ticket to a couple on the beach. After Sawyer and I quietly made our way back to the road next to the beach, his eye was caught by a large yellow digger. He headed right for it. My favorite moment in this video is about seven seconds in when he says “DIGGER!”

Lucky for us, after we played with the digger and followed the doggies, the officer came our way with the horse. My videos from here on down sort of miss the important moments like meeting the horse (it happened right after I turned off the camera)…

…like me getting caught in a wave when Sawyer and I get a little to close (which happened right after I turned of the camera)…

…and especially missing the moment when Sawyer got way to close to the edge, got drenched by a sneaker wave, kept walking into the water, fell face forward, and had me rescue him. We were both incredibly wet. I was surprised that the bay water was not as cold as I expected. Sawyer was surprised to be wet. What a sandy mess. This is why the video is only 17 seconds long. I had to shove it into my pocket quite quickly while I was pulling Sawyer out of the water.
